April 2019 -
Born into the System
Colter wasn’t born on the open range. He was born on April 15, 2019, inside the Bruneau Off-Range Corrals in Idaho. His mother, a red roan from the Antelope Valley HMA in Nevada, was rounded up pregnant and gave birth behind the fences of a corporate livestock operation. Colter is living proof of a system where our public lands are becoming billionaire feedlots: corporations pay pennies to graze cattle on native mustang territory, while receiving millions in government contracts to warehouse the very horses they displace.
August 2025 -
Outbidding the Kill Buyer
We found Colter at the Centennial Livestock Auction in Fort Collins, Colorado. Despite his grim surroundings, we were immediately taken by his spindly legs, gentle energy, and the curious, youthful look in his eye. We bid directly against a kill buyer to secure his freedom, bringing him home to the rescue so he could finally rest, recover, and settle in.
Fall 2026 -
Working Through the Buck
Colter entered professional training in October 2025. Bright, intelligent, and energetic, he was an incredibly fast learner. While he initially struggled with a bucking problem—which is almost certainly what got him tossed away at the auction in the first place—he quickly learned that it was way more fun to just relax and enjoy himself. He cruised through his next three months of under-saddle training with flying colors.
Winter 2025 -
A Perfect Match
During his training, update videos of Colter’s progress caught the eye of Michele, a wonderful woman who was sympathetic to the plight of the mustangs and looking for a trail partner of her own. She traveled to meet him in December, had a fantastic ride, and officially adopted him in January 2026 once his training was complete. Colter and Michele now live in Ogden, Utah, where their next chapters will be defined by a lifetime of summer adventures together.
