Spring 2010 -
Origins in the High Desert
Coyote’s journey began in Nevada’s Fox Hog HMA, where he was rounded up as a six-month-old foal. He spent nearly 14 years away from the wild, passing through various hands in the domestic system before our paths crossed.
November 2021 -
The Intervention
We discovered Coyote through a Facebook ad in Cody, Wyoming. He had been picked up at a local sale by someone who knew nothing about him and intended to send him off to the Billings Livestock Sale—a well-known gateway to the slaughter pipeline—if he wasn’t sold by the following weekend. We secured him immediately and brought him home.
2021 to 2025 -
Healing at the Ranch
Upon his arrival, we found a wildly kind spirit masked by deep-seated trauma. For four years, we explored every possible avenue to help him overcome his fears and transition into a dependable riding partner. However, at 17 years old, Coyote eventually communicated that a life of domestic work was not his future.
Fall 2025 -
The Final Chapter
Recognizing that his heart still belonged to the range, we helped Coyote transition to a large-scale mustang sanctuary. He has since integrated into a herd of other rescued mustangs and is thriving by living out his days in the vast, open spaces he was taken from so many years ago.
