September 2024 to January 2026 - Failed by the System

Adopted from the BLM in September 2024, Ibis’s story took a dark turn. By January 2026, this four-year-old burro found himself dumped in a kill pen in Stroud, Oklahoma. Somewhere along the way, he had been severely neglected and starved to the point of near death, arriving in the slaughter pipeline as truly nothing but skin and bones.

Late January 2026 -
Fighting for His Life

When Ibis first arrived to our care, his body simply gave out. He collapsed and had to spend two critical days under veterinary care at the hospital. He was incredibly weak, and even in his diminished state, he remained deeply wary of humans and tried to keep his distance. But beneath that fear and exhaustion, Ibis was a fighter, and he miraculously pulled through.

Winter 2026 -
Refeeding and Recognition

Once he was strong enough to make the trip to Rescue Ranchito, we began the slow, careful process of refeeding him and building his strength. We quickly realized that Ibis had likely never been truly recognized or spoken to with kindness in his life. Once we started simply talking to him and letting him be seen, his sweet, adventurous, and intelligent personality fully blossomed. He went from keeping his distance to actively seeking out affection and giving kisses.

April 2026 -
Against All Odds

During his remarkable recovery, Ibis formed a beautiful, inseparable bond with our two other rescue donkeys. We are so incredibly proud of how far he has come and how he defied every single odd to survive. This April, his story gets the ultimate happy ending: Ibis and his two best friends are all heading to their forever home together with Kristin at the Happy Burro Ranch!
