Three Strikes in the Holding Pens
After being passed over at three separate adoption events, Siskin and Tern were labeled "Sale Authority" by the BLM. This status meant these untouched, three-year-old mustangs could be purchased outright for just $25—a dangerously low price that puts horses at high risk of ending up in the slaughter pipeline. We walked into the holding corrals, recognized their curious and sweet nature, and bought them both.
November 2024 -
The Decompression Phase
Siskin and Tern arrived at their respective trainers to begin the critical first phase of their rehabilitation: decompression. Before we ever asked anything of them, we provided a safe, quiet space for them to acclimate to a domestic environment and let their nervous systems reset after months in the BLM holding facilities.
Winter to Spring 2025 -
The Learning Phase
The next several months were dedicated entirely to gentling—the slow, patient process of earning their trust. Using low-pressure horsemanship, the boys moved from being completely wild to willingly accepting a human presence. Once we established a foundation of trust, both trainers successfully guided them through halter training and eventually to confidently accepting a rider under saddle.
April 2025 -
Healers for Heroes
In April, we proudly gifted Siskin and Tern to At Ease. Because mustangs are highly sensitive to intention and body language, the "Bird Boys" now use their intuitive nature to help veterans and first responders heal from PTSD. Their journey from at-risk $25 tag numbers to vital partners in mental health therapy is exactly why we do this work.
