July 2024 -
The Illusion of "Broke"
We found Willet at the Bowie auction, where he was owned by a barn rider and being flipped to the highest bidder. While he was technically sold as "broke to ride," he was jumping out of his skin at the slightest noise or human movement. We knew immediately that despite his label, he was neither mentally nor physically ready to go to a safe forever home.
August 2024 to Fall 2025 -
A Hard Reset
After bringing him home, an early attempt to ride him resulted in him bolting in sheer panic, leaving Casey with an injured leg. It was the ultimate wake-up call that Willet needed to go entirely back to the basics. For nearly a year, we simply let him decompress. During that time, we discovered a deeply insecure horse who clung to our mares for maternal support, but who also possessed an incredibly sweet soul that loved hugs and affection.
October 2025 to January 2026 -
Learning to Self-Regulate
By October, Willet finally showed us he was mentally ready to try again. He spent three months with a wonderful trainer in Fort Lupton, Colorado. The focus wasn't just on groundwork and light riding, but on teaching him to trust himself and learn how to self-regulate his emotions when things got scary. In January 2026, he returned to us a completely new horse—calm, secure, bright-eyed, and happy.
Early 2026 -
A Family Horse in the Making
In late February, Willet entered his second phase of under-saddle training, where he is spent one month refining his skills. This amazingly sweet, calm-natured gelding is shaping up to be a fantastic family horse, perfect for mellow trails or arena work. While best suited for an intermediate rider right now, he has the temperament to eventually become a beginner and kid-safe mount. He will be ready to meet his forever family in early summer 2026.
